This was purchased from Brazil, delivered to a US address and I picked it up there. This was one of 4 items. Delivery was on time! When opened it up to install had issues. All hardware was presente but only a sheet with all the warranties (many languages) and a small sheet of how to connect it.
Searching the WD support site, I was able to download drivers, software, applications, manuals, etc. It would not get recognized my computer, running Windows 8.1 Pro of 64 bits. Finally was able to determine disk was 100% blank, nothing. After using HDD management software and some issues with Windows, system finally recognized it on the USB.
I am testing Western Digital SmartWare at this time, for a few days, and it is wonderful. I have more than 1.6 million files on 2 drives (Raid array) and WD drive internal for 1.8 TB. In a few hours, it "backed up" both drives. Was concerned as as it Works, shows what is going on as to what is done and what could not be done. Not sure why, but when done with "normal" files it returned to some 1,200 files of 400 Gb in the separate list, and in less than an hour they were backed up.
I only keep 3 versions of programs modified, and did several test while actually modifying documents, power points, etc., and it does a perfect job. Seems as soon as I save it, then go to file explorer and open the directory, the file is there.
I am now an IT consultant with 45 years’ experience in IT, from advance system programing to sales support and datacenter management. What this simple product does is amazing. Should be easy to install (if instruction manual and CD were included) and operation, I really think that in 5 minutes a 7 year old could be handling it.
It performs backup and restore as good as a large datacenter would have. Since disk, capacities are so large, this is a very economical solution. As a note, you get 30 days of use of WD SmartWare, and after about 5 days of testing, purchasing it is worth every cent.
As a professional consultant in IT, My Book is a perfect solution to small business and home office users to save yourselves hundreds of hours of rebuilding if you lose your system for any reason, including hardware theft, which must be considered.
Will be hard to find a better SOLUTION than this, unless you want to pay 100s of thousands of dollars to the large manufactures.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Connectivity and transfer speed issues
Has anyone else experienced problems with this? Mine is extremely slow and loses connection occasionally. Typically with larger file transfers.

Strange. I had problems of getting my Windows 8.1 Pro to see it on the USB. After setting up the drive from scratch (it arrived blank, not formated at all).
You might take a look at the ROMBIOS USB settings. Mine (gigabyte mother board, new) I did not use legacy settings, but have USB on from the start up. Also check your drivers that they are most current up to date. I use a purchase program, Driver Genius to do that for me. With hundreds of drivers, impossible to do by hand, so look into some driver management program.
I am using WS SmartWare and have no issues at all. It backups continunously. Some of my files are over 8 gb, and no issues. I would look into Rom settings, driver updates, including your system updates. Nice that WD will replace it, not normal, but maybe they know something of it.
Just to do that, I am surprised.

does it support USB 2.0 Interface?
Yes, old question but it downward comptable. I tested it in USB 2, but only slower.

Well this question has been around for months. I ran benchmark on mine, expect it is 5400 rpm due to latency values.
I expect there is no fixed answer to this. Normally when they mount these types of "products", manufacturing will supply what ever drive they have available. You could buy 2, one 5400, 7200 for example.
For this drive, and connection type (not a SATA 3 for example internal to your computer) it is not intended to be a gammer´s drive, but only for backup.

Do these drives work with any operating system? I use Windows 7.
Windows 7 and Windows 8 it Works with. You might have to down load drivers and software for your system, as mine did not come with any, for some reason, but is not a stopper, only a pain in the tusch thing.

Will it work with a laptop?...
Does a laptop provide enough power or is it only compatible with a desktop running power from a PSU?...
Yes, I can not imagine any system it will not work with.
This is an external drive, not one of the "micro" drives that plugs into an USB port, and draws power from that. And those will not work with all USB ports, as port has to have enough capacity of 5 volts to supply the drive.
My Book has an external power supply, and it must be used inorder for the drive to spin up.

What is the Rotation Speed
How long would the avg. defrag. be? I would hope the speed would be near 7200 or better.
Defrag speed depends upon percentage of how much is fragmented, size of files, and number of files.
Sorry, there is no fix answer to this. But with USB 3.0, it is fast, if your computer has a true 3.0 port.

How do I install Acronis True Image WD Edition?
I purchased the 4TB MyBook. Internet listing and box indicate WD Smartware Pro and Acronis TrueImage WD edition comes with the product.
The Smartware product wants an activation code to upgrade or enable "Pro".
There is no install files for Acronis True Image.

I had to down load both, as nothing came with my MY BOOK. Drive was blank, not even formated.
I downloaded Acronis and Smartware Pro. I have purchased both but will be using only WD SmartWare. I know SmartWare has a 30 day trial. Acronis I bought. These type of tools or software, are normally purchased separately. I have never seen them bundled.

Can this provide auxiliary storage for a DirecTV DVR, using a SATA cable?
DirecTV DVR's have SATA ports that enable external drives to be connected. The DVR will format the drive, and the hard drive inside the DVR will be inaccessible while the external drive is connected. Does this drive have an SATA port, and does it come with an SATA cable?
I have SKY here in Brazil. Depends upon your box. Sky formats the disk in a way, encodes it, so you can not record a movie/program and take it to some other box. This is part of the copywrite laws. In addition, you can not plug it into a PC, USB or SATA and read the data.
I had problems with their light DVR failing. The disk, only way to get it back, was to use a hard drive management software, where I could go in, reset partitions, and format it. As to MyBook, it should work and it does come only with USB cables. The DVR I had, before getting an internal version (much better) was only USB connections.
My Book is USB only.

If the drive has a crash, physical impact with heads and platters, it is gone. This seldom happens on its own now days, but if you drop the drive while it is on, it will happen.
If you disconnect it during a write cycle, normally yes, but with conditions. There are software available for purchase on the market, that will attempt to rebuild the clusters, tables, etc, and sometimes it works well. However, normally you will not get 100% back.

It depends. The wall power converter I have was for US only. International versions come with a power converter, that you snap on the outlet pins for your location, more or less common now days.
The converter I have, is 120 V only. You need to look at the bottom of the converter, to confirm the input voltage. International version, which are sold here in Brazil, operate from around 106 volts to 240 volts and automatic.
If yours is only 120 volts, I would suggest you purchase a converter that has minimum capacity. Mine is plugged in, do not want to remove it as in use. But output needs to be at least 12 volts (DC) and 2 amps, not sure but standard. You also need to make sure that plug to the drive is correct. I bought a converter for a NetBook that went out at BB in Denver, and it came with about 6 adaptors for common connections to laptops and etc.
If you use 120 volt converter in 240 v, if for sure will burn up, and could also damage your disk drive, or other device. Purchase a power converter that is bi-volt. You never have to worry about the input voltage, and costs are around US$ 20 dollars, well Worth the investimento.
