For the most part, the hardware on this device is excellent. It's lightweight, waterproof (not just water resistant), and is subtle in design. Great for wearing 24/7. However, there is one major issue.

I bought this for my husband after I had a small version myself for nearly a year, even though my screen started to go bad. I worked with Garmin to have mine replaced - in fact, I ended up having it replaced 3 times, and in each one the screen failed. Now, my husband's is having the exact same issue. Since I've seen this in 4 different devices, I now believe this is not just a "lemon" or a "fluke," but a fatal flaw in the design of this watch.

Garmin eventually replaced my device with the vivoactive (much more reliable screen, as far as I can tell). We have Geek Squad protection on my husband's, so we'll see what happens next. But I sincerely hope it will not be this same model.

Garmin does have quality products - just not this one. Go with the newer version (the vivosmart HR) or the vivoactive. Avoid the original vivosmart.

No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I'd had a Dell Studio 17 for 6 years and have been looking into new laptops for the last 2 years. What I wanted simply didn't exist until now - powerful and sleek. This laptop truly has everything I wanted, and the 2-in-1 design is a nice bonus. In addition to replacing my Dell, it's a pretty decent replacement for my 4-year-old Acer tablet. It's a little large and heavy for that purpose, but between this and my smartphone, I'm pretty well covered.

I'm not necessarily a "power user," but I do more than most cheaper laptops can provide. For awhile I thought I would have to settle for a gaming laptop - it was the only way to get the power I wanted, but came at a higher price and bulkier design. Asus has really rocked it for me on this machine. It's truly the best laptop I've owned. It can play games and edit photos beautifully. The screen resolution is amazing and the processor is blazing fast. Eventually I plan to upgrade to a SSD and expand the memory to 12gb, but for now it does everything I want and more.

I waited for a sale on it, so I kept reading other reviews. Most of the negative reviews are either for lemons (which Best Buy will replace) or simple software issues that are easily fixed if you know a little something about PCs. Windows 8.1 isn't great, but it sounds like Windows 10 will be an improvement. Some mentioned that it's a little heavy, but you do have to sacrifice something to get this much power. Maybe in the next 5-10 years someone will be able to engineer internals differently to improve battery life and lighten the weight, but honestly it's not a deal breaker. This machine is portable enough to take with me back and forth to work, but powerful enough to create vectors and edit photos with Adobe CS. Love it.

I would recommend this to a friend!

No, this one does not have GPS.

Does the vivosmart have back lighting so you can view the display at night? If not - - which Garmin unit has this feature?

The display is rather bright (which you can adjust if it's too much), so it does not need an additional backlight. The new vivosmart HR and the vivoactive cannot be seen in the dark, so they have backlights.

I've only owned my Vivosmart since mid-October and already the screen seems to be cut off as well as lines running through some of the characters. Is this covered under warranty? If so, how would I go about getting my vivosmart sent in for repair?

I had this same issue, and they were wonderful to work with. They can't fix it, but they will replace it. Hopefully you'll get one that avoids this issue.

Does watch measure cycling activity/distance?

I am a 60-something male whose primary form of exercise is cycling. Does the Garmin watch measure distance traveled?

Yes, it will track distance, speed, and elevation, but it won't show you a map of your activity without additional accessories (this device does not have GPS).
