I used an external adapter to format the drive because my workstation didn't have the capability for adding a second drive. After formatting the drive I used the Acronis software to clone the old drive. I let it run overnight and in the morning it was ready to go. After a few tweaks it performed perfectly. I used Iobit Advanced System Care 8 to polish things a bit. All in all it was relatively painless.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Does this work like a usb flash drive?
I'm looking for something that works like a flash drive...plug it in and copy from the hard drive or an SD card and paste it onto the external drive...is the the drive for me or is there something else that I should get? I don't want to have to install any software to read and use the drive. Thanks.
i have a similar drive from another manufacturer. Aside from drivers, there may be some software involved but it will most likely be on the portable drive. It should work pretty much as a flash drive. Mine does. Straight copying of files should work just fine.

It should be. The only thing you will need to do is format the drive for whatever OS you want to use.

I have windows 7 professional installed.Would I have to re-install my operating system?
Yes, it is assuming you have a similar SATA drive. I have Windows 7 Pro as well and it works just fine. Use the Acronis Clone function to make a duplicate of your old drive on the new one. Cloning makes an exact copy of the old drive including the OS and programs. You shouldn't have to reinstall anything. I didn't. You should be fine. It takes a while but I had no problems, just a few tweaks needed. I used the Iobit Advanced System Care 8 software to help with that and everything works just fine.

How to acquire Acronis True Image
Once the hdd is purchased how does one go about getting the Acronis True Image cloning software? Is this a trial only offer for Acronis software?
It is a somewhat limited but free version. Go to the Western Digital website (WDC.com I think). Navigate down to the support for internal hard drives. Enter the model number and one of the options returned should be for the software and the user's guide. That should do it.
