It all started when I heard about the Nikon P910 but it is huge so I wanted to look at a P610 and try it. I couldn't find one that worked locally and wasn't going to spend a lot sight unseen. Then I saw the Sony and gave it a try in the store and it took in focus shots at maximum zoom in the store. I bought it. In actuality it is 35 to 1200 in 35mm equivalent which is good for me. I went to an aquarium to try it out and got excellent results, again hand held. I should have used fill in flash for some closeups but other than that I am totally blown away with the results. I've been doing photography for many years and this is the best camera I've owned to date and I owned SLR's back in the day.
I would recommend this to a friend!

How long can I expect the battery charge to last in this camera? Is a higher capacity battery available?

I took it out and took photos and movies for 3 hours and the battery still indicates full. According to manual 155/200 minutes shooting stills, 50/55 shooting typical movies. The lower number is with LCD viewer, the longer number is with viewfinder.

Uploading photos and video to MacBook Pro

What is involved in uploading photos and videos from the Sony HX300 to a MacBook Pro? I can't buy this camera unless the uploading process is smooth and easy.
You take out the SD card and plug it into the Mac. If it doesn't have a reader buy an external reader. Plugging a camera into a computer can damage the camera's operating system.

Can you turn the flash off if desired and can you also force the flash to be on?

Yes, you can.

Can you hook up this camera to tv via HDMI cable and play videos?

It has a mini HDMI connector. So you should be able to.
