I purchased this 29 days ago on sale and really wanted to like it. I did an earlier review that mentioned some charging problems, but the rest of it was positive. Unfortunately, for the third time, the battery seems to drain randomly and is difficult to recharge. This time, it does not want to recharge, so I'm taking the unit back for a store credit or refund.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

OK, this is NOT a gaming laptop for high resolution, graphic and CPU intensive applications.
I asked a Best Buy salesman named Hiep (pronounced Hip) in their Lincoln, NE store to show me a 13.3" i5 or higher, affordable 2in1 laptop with a backlight keyboard. This is what he showed me along with an HP Spectrum (very expensive). (Unfortunately they did not have any in stock and I was just visiting so I had to order and buy the Dell at home)
It is...an excellent laptop for just about anything else except video editing of large files. And..except for those of us who just have to have an i7.... ;-)
The memory is DDR4 and upgradeable to 16GB according to sources on the internet (2 slots). The SSD in the model I reviewed is a SanDisk Z400s....not a speed demon but significantly faster than any equivalent hard drive and uses less power without moving parts to worry about. It can also be upgraded.
There are several YouTube videos on how to safely open the laptop and upgrade memory and drive.
The backlight on the keyboard has two levels and both are excellent in low light and the dark.
Key travel is short, but I was able to type rapidly without problem. Tactile feedback is good. Layout is good and the horizontal spacing is very close to full sized, with the vertical spacing a bit tighter.
Streaming off the internet, the SSD or a USB 3.0 port is smooth and clear.
Graphics are very good with clear text and good overall color reproduction: Intel 520HD.
If you need more memory that 256GB, buy one of the micro USB flash drives attach it to the USB 3.0 port for an additional 128GB or so. Or..pop the case open and add memory to the 2 slots.
The laptop boots up with the Win10 Hello function, which uses facial recognition to log you in, with an 8 digit pin as backup in case it can't recognize you. I've found it to be very good in both low and bright light situations. So far, it has not recognized anyone else that I've shown it too. You have the option at startup to skip that step.
Currently selling at a discounted $749, I found this laptop hard to locate with several stores out of stock. However, twice in the past week, for a day, Best Buy has dropped the price of the i7 to $799 (from $999) that has 12GB of memory and a 512GB SSD. If you can find one of those you may want to spend an additional $50. The SSD is similar in performance to the one in the i5.
The 7th generation i-series CPUs have been released by Intel and are in production in time for the holidays. These will have premium prices with improved graphic capabilities, including 4K....if you need that.
Finally, there is a 15.6" version of this unit that I don't recommend. It is essentially a 13.3" mobo and parts in a larger case. I found the larger screen to be a little twisty when converting to table mode. And...the 13.3" is much easier to use when traveling by air.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I purchased the i5 version of this laptop a week ago and just happened to check prices when I saw the i7 for only $50 more with 4GB more memory and double the SSD. Do I need it??? Nope...but the temptation was too great to pass up for the small price increase.
Having said that....the price has gone back up again...so keep your eye on pricing, the 7th generation CPUs are coming out and 6th generation hardware will continue to drop. The 7th gen i7 CPUs have lower power requirements and support 4K. Neither are a requirement for my purposes.
The 13.3" is a perfect format for this 2 in 1. I tried a 15.6", but it felt wobbly when I converted to tablet mode. And, if you travel by air, it fits better.
Speccy reveals that the processor is a Skylake (6th gen) ultra low power processor. Memory is DDR4 which is a plus.
There are two memory slots; #1 has 8GB and #2 4GB. The former is manufactured by Hyundai, the latter by Samsung. Your laptop may vary as manufacturers are constantly changing to get best price points on components.
The SSD is an SK hynix SC308, a moderately performing SSD, typical of what will be standard on most laptops at this price point. The manufacturer's warranty on the drive is 5 years...don't know if that applies to an OEM install. The i5 has a SanDisk Z400s, similar in performance. SKHynix is a relative newcomer to the SSD market and their latest SL series SSDs are top rated. They have been manufacturing quality memory for years as an OEM. Like memory, your unit may have a different manufacturer.
One note on the SC308. An internet search on the drive comes up pretty sparse and a single online provider has them for sale. The SL308 is top rated. I've emailed SKHynix for clarification since the SC308 is not listed on their US web site.
The SSD is not a speed demon by standards of more expensive models, but it is at least 5 times faster than a hard drive according to reviews.
Good news is that the memory and SSD can be accessed with some moderate effort, so replacements and upgrades are possible.
Screen and graphics are clear and crisp, with good depth so that shadows on the desktop shortcuts text display clearly. Touchscreen is acceptably responsive without any "dead" spots so far.
Shortly after configuring the system and accepting Dell's request to run their software, a BIOS update was downloaded and installed without problem.
System switches between tablet and laptop mode smoothly.
CPU runs cool, at least for my applications. For example, you will need to manually upgrade to Win 10 Anniversary edition. CPU did not significantly heat up during that intensive process.
Two minor irritations: the touch pad is extremely sensitive and the power button is located so that if you pick up the unit, you may press it most of the time. Fortunately, there is a delayed response built in to the power switch so it is more irritating than a functional problem. I haven't found an adjustment to the touchpad sensitivity yet.
The "Hello" Win 10 function is interesting and works well with facial recognition. So far, it only recognizes me....not any friends or relatives. However, it has failed to recognize me twice and the backup pin works fine. Biometrics are not highly secure like passwords, so use at your own risk. I'm in a low risk environment with this laptop.
Media streaming is good and sound quality is good overall. It's not concert hall quality...but what laptop is?
Haven't done any serious testing on battery life, but Windows reports it should have 6 hours or so of use.
Keyboard is well laid out with just enough response and play to allow rapid typing.
Having said all this....the i5 version of this laptop is excellent as well unless you need the i7 hyperthreading and power with some graphics and/or processing intensive applications. I would be happy with either.
I do expect prices on the 6th gen PCs to continue dropping, especially over the holidays, but not much more than what I paid for this i7 configuration.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: Price, programmability
What's not so great: Keystroke is a little mushy compared to more expensive keyboards
OK...maybe I'm a little unfair here...but slight mushy keys can be an issue for some folks (including me),
However, response is good to excellent and ergonomics are good.
The keyboard has feet on the back that allow you to either lay it flat or at an angle on the desk: an ergonomic plus over other keyboards without that feature.
The USB transmitter is very small and does not block access to surrounding USB ports. Transmission accuracy is excellent.
The function keys are programmable for those who like to do some customization.
The keyboard, while compact, is comfortable to type on, similar to a full sized keyboard while giving you the advantage of using less space. The numeric keypad is a plus for those who may work with numbers in spreadsheets and/or accounting software.
For the price: this is an excellent value.

What's great about it: Ezel Hinge, lighted keyboard, adjustable fonts
What's not so great: Sigh...how about an i7? Yeah, it's still Windows 8...
This is the FIRST laptop or tablet that I've used that hits the mark ergonomically.
The Ezel hinge allows placement of the screen at an angle and close position that FINALLY makes a touchscreen laptop practical. (see picture below from Acer website). Acer calls it "touch and type" in their promo video. When left in any position, the screen is stable and can be touched as needed without worry that it will move.
With standard hinge configurations, you have to reach across the wrist support area, touch pad and keyboard to touch the screen. It's not comfortable, efficient or practical. Such hinges force me to either use the keyboard or convert to tablet mode with a touchscreen keyboard.
Speaking of the keyboard, it is nicely recessed into the frame which prevents "key rash" on the touch screen, a common problem with all clam shell laptops. The key travel is a bit tight for my preference, but still responsive enough for fast typists...just have to adapt over time.
I am not a touch pad fan and rarely use them, preferring to use a wireless mouse, so the placement of the touch pad is actually a plus for my use.
Note that Acer provides a separate fold-able wrist pad in a leather like pouch if you need the additional support while typing.
The 4th generation i5 with latest Intel HD graphics is a plus: supports 3D rendering and modeling. I tried a popular architectural program and it was responsive, considering that an i5 is the minimum recommended configuration.
Boot up times are quick once you get the system configured and running, especially quick considering this is a 5400 rpm HD (but it does have 8MB on board cache, which helps)
The USB 3.0 and media reader slots are a plus. I can move photographs from my camera to USB key and back quickly, as well as large files.
The sound is the best I've heard from any laptop or tablet to date (and I've sampled/reviewed several over the past 2 years)
Quality for video conferencing or calling is decent. Wireless connectivity is up to the latest "n" spec, which means you can connect to 5Ghz channels at faster speeds if your router supports it.
Colors and clarity on the screen are good to excellent, depending on source, e.g., streaming, jpeg file, document file conference call, etc.
Acer provides several add on services which I have not utilized to date. I am not a fan of sending things to the cloud all the time: prefer local networked backup drives, but that is a personal thing.
I like the slight angle of the screen in tablet mode and that the keyboard is protected unlike other convertible laptops.
Weight is not an issue for me.....come on folks, what's an extra 8-16 ounces in the greater scheme of things????
System works well with standard Microsoft Office Pro products: Word, Excel, Publish, Project and Access.
I did have one glitch after I configured and updated the system: when I shut it down, it locked up as if it had gone into hibernation instead. The "secret" was to hold the power button for approximately 30 seconds and the system rebooted. No problems since then.
Acer has provided a proprietary port which is supposed to support additional connectivity in the future.
Final note: the Ezel hinge is magnetic, which I assume helps with smooth and stable adjustments. So....don't put your credit cards or wallet....or favorite magnetic media on top of the hinge...you may get a surprise.
This product is... Good sound quality, Perfect for Business, Big screen size, easy to set up, ezel mode a plus for touch and type, fast overall with 4th gen i5

What's great about it: Excellent construction and design
What's not so great: Windows 8.1, small fonts
From a physical design, this is the best laptop/tablet/2in1 that I have seen in a decade...really. I am a huge fan of the engineering and execution that this PC demonstrates.
The keyboard bezel is non-smudge and touchpad is responsive without being too sensitive while typing. The outside shell is fingerprint and smudge resistant. The hinge is sturdy and flexible without screen flicker when changing orientations.
Transition to tablet is smooth and without error or problems in my experience.
This is an excellent laptop/tablet for general business use, media streaming, teleconferencing, and online activities. The CPU is a Gen4 i5 CPU with plenty of power for multitasking and working with large spreadsheets and presentations. Keyboard is compact and easy to use. Speed typing is possible.
The network connectivity is solid and picks up even weak signals when I go outside to work.
The display is beautiful, with vivid colors and fast response. Every now and then, the touch screen is slow...not sure if it was the screen or the application. The screen does collect finger smudges, but cleans easily and is acceptably responsive to the use of a stylus.
Voice commands are available, though I have not tried them to date.
The camera is excellent for teleconferences. Field of scope is wide enough and focus sharp enough that you can set it up several feet away from users and get 4 or 5 folks comfortably and clearly in view.
The built in microphone picked up voices easily and clearly.
The speakers/sound playback is excellent for such a slim form factor...one of the best I've ever heard.
I did not try any gaming other than Solitaire, but I suspect the 4MB of memory is slim and the video hardware not up to par for serious gamers.
Only two problems from my viewpoint/use: Windows 8.1 and screen fonts.
Windows 8.1 is designed to work "in the cloud". It forces you to sign up with a Microsoft Live ID, unlike 8.0 that gave you an option. I prefer not to use the cloud...just a personal preference. I dislike having to use a Microsoft Live ID. (You can modify the sign in later...but you are still linked to the cloud). There is an advantage if you want to synchronize files across multiple devices, similar to Apple IOS and Android.
The screen fonts in menus are small even set to "large" in Windows. If you need larger fonts in menus, you are out of luck.
This product is... Good sound quality, A touch pad that works great, Perfect for Business, Big screen size, A nice compact size, easy to set up, lightning fast, beautiful engineering and design

What's great about it: 2in1, Free upgrade to Win 8.1
What's not so great: Touchpad stops working in desktop mode
This laptop is not a speed demon, so if you are impatient and want the fastest internet connectivity and video replays, this is probably not for you. For word processing, spreadsheets, etc., it is fine.
There is a lot to like about this laptop besides price. The 2in1 feature works well and the hinge/keyboard connector is sturdy, as is the entire laptop (better than the one I see on a similar HP). Batteries in both the keyboard and the tablet/screen make this a little heavier than other laptops of this size.
The 13.3 inch screen and form factor is excellent in terms of fitting brief cases and bags unlike the bigger 15 in and bigger laptops. Response of the screen is average: sometimes you have to touch for a full 2 seconds before it responds on some menus. I used both fingers and stylus. And...it fits OK on airplane tables whether in full laptop format or tablet format.
The fit and finish is excellent...fingerprints do not show up on plastic or burnished metal case as much as on other models.
The keyboard is not full stroke...but works find for fast typists in my testing.
Internet streaming of videos was a problem when tested on 3 different wireless networks, with IE and Chrome browsers, all at 10Mbps or higher. Netflix played OK, but YouTube videos were often delayed with buffering issues. Internet pages were slow...to me...to load, especially if there were lots of graphics on the page.
Wireless connectivity was a problem from time to time...dropping even though signal strength was good to excellent.
There are settings in the browsers and add-ons that strip out much of the advertisements and graphics on a page, so if you don't care about them when you first load a page...you can speed up page load times significantly.
One bug that "bugged me" was that the touchpad would disable randomly whether the screen/tablet had been detached or not. I had to go into the settings and re-enable it almost every time. I suspect a driver update would solve this issue.
A major plus is that the upgrade to Win 8.1 is free: some versions of Win 8 require purchase from the Microsoft store.
Norton Internet Security has a free trial: it is my preferred security suite. However, be sure to update daily if possible: I did not for a few days and the program had to fix itself before updating. (I have the same problem on my desktop)
Final note: the instructions recommend you create a recovery disk before doing any customizing of the laptop, giving one the impression that there is not a Win 8 restore partition on the drive. There is, so don't worry...but a recovery disk is always a good idea.
I would recommend this to a friend with some reservations as mentioned above.

What's great about it: Hardware, form factor, preformance, stable, fast, apps
What's not so great: No daily Dilbert app.....yet
Shortly after I purchased the phone, an over the air (OTA) upgrade was offered. It worked perfectly without modifying any of the settings I had put on the phone. A stable upgrade is a big plus!
As compared to my previous Android Samsung SII, this phone solves the GPS issues of its predecessor and the camera is better with a flash and higher resolution. Camera shutter lag from previous versions is fixed.
The screen is beautiful and clear...as everyone notes. It is covered with Gorilla glass, so highly resistant to scratching and breaking.
Obviously it is quicker to use overall. The specifications are better and the on board memory is sufficient for normal use without need for an SD card. However, I do recommend having one if you download lots of documents and/or take lots of pictures.
Touchwiz and Swype are much quicker. Swype typing is quicker and significantly more accurate: I prefer it to a standard keyboard for most applications.
The Utility folder/widget is useful. It contains a calculator, memo pad, mini diary, task list, video player, voice command and voice recorder apps in one window. The voice commands are limited....but work well in normal use. You can check your calendar, voice dial, search for things, email, connect with social sites, dictate a text message, call up maps and get directions, play music, go to web sites, open apps, record your voice, set alarms, do local searches for coffee shops, pizza, etc., and dictate a memo. It doesn't have a name like on the iPhone, but it works.
As noted by others, videos play beautifully with wireless, 4G and onboard files. I use Netflix regularly and it works well.
Wifi tethering is not as robust on this phone: T-mobile wants to charge extra for Hot Spot service, which is in addition to your data plan...similar to what AT&T does for the iPhone. The phone tethers quickly with my Samsung Galaxy Tablet 10.1. From time to time, it does allow me to use my standard data plan without forcing me to use a Hot Spot plan. According to T-mobile, the Hot Spot service is prorated...so if you only use it for a day, then you only pay for a day....if you remember to cancel it...
Kies air is a nice addition: no need to connect the phone to a PC for any Kies enabled updates.
T-mobile includes "More for Me", an app that searches out "great deals" for you in whatever city you are in based on some basic demographic data you give it.
They also include "Bonus Apps", a selection of additional widgets/clocks that you may find useful...
The phone supports wireless calling, which is an excellent option if T-mobile signal quality degrades inside your home or office. I live in a heavily wooded area and as a result I have blind spots in my home. With wireless calling, that problem is solved.
The photo editor is useful for minor changes and edits...."on the fly".
I have not tried video calling on the phone yet...so can't comment, sorry.
Battery life is OK for my use: I usually get a full day and charge it over night. The rapid recharge time is a plus: usually around an hour or so once the battery has been fully charged a few times.
As for security, there are options to lock the phone as well as to encrypt it, or you can select apps from the Market to encrypt particular files and emails. I have had good success with both AVG (free) and Lookout Security (free and paid) on this phone.
A bonus: this phone works with the Epson iPrint printer app which allows you to print .jpg and pdf files from your phone, as well as scan documents/pictures into your phone. I use mine with the Epson Workforce 845.
And finally: it's a great phone...no dropped calls unless I drive into a dead spot and lose signal, voice quality is noticeably improved for both speaking and listening, the keypad is large and easy to use with icons at the bottom for voice mail and messaging. And...the phone multi-tasks so I can do other things on the phone like check my calendar or make a note while speaking with someone without hanging up.
This product is... Lightning fast, Tough/durable, Good video quality, Good call quality, works with epson wireless printing
About me... Heavy apps user, Business Professional, Need phone to keep me organized, check a lot of things on the internet daily

What's great about it: Looks good, more reasonably priced that other styli
What's not so great: A little short in larger hands, and not as effective as a finger for writing.
Decent construction, though the transfer of body electricity is not as good as other styli.
Response of this on an iPad2 is decent and slightly slower on the Samsung Galaxy tablet 10.1.
It is great for selecting items, but moderate to poor for taking notes or drawing: there is too much of a lag from the time you touch the screen to the time the line gets drawn.
For now, my finger is still the best "stylus" overall.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Is this the same model from the Dell website or slightly different? They are both new and the images look the same, but the specifications don't seem to match. The one on Dells site has a USB type c port and is windows Hello compatible.

This unit is the same as Dell's website except for memory. Currently they are showcasing a 16GB unit while this one is 12. This laptop has USB-c and is Hello compatible.

SSD is SATA or PCle type ?

SATA III on my unit. Use a utility like Speccy to confirm what your unit may be after you buy it.

Is this Inspiron gray in color or is it the brushed silver/aluminum look? Best Buy states that it is gray but I can not find any pictures of this model in grey online anywhere, only the silver one.

It's more of a brushed metal look...fingerprints are minimal

Is it fast enough to play video games on?

Always check the game publisher's web site. The CPU has plenty of horsepower and the SSD is much quicker than a hard drive. If you play online, the network chip is quick, wired or wireless. The built in graphics are Intel 520HD. For highly graphic intensive games, you will have problems unless you lower details, AA and resolution, but the game will most likely be playable....

Is this large enough memory to carry photo shop and a large amount of photos

Yes....depending on the format you shoot with your camera, e.g. RAW or jpeg...or just collecting pictures from others. The 12GB memory and hyperthreading CPU work well with Photoshop and other apps that take advantage of hyperthreading.

is this 2016 model? brand new?

Yes, though this particular model has been available for about a year and has good reviews overall from independent sources. Read my review for more information. The new i-series CPUs are coming out and stores are trying to get rid of inventory before Thanksgiving and Christmas.
