Cheap Sound, Terrible Radio Tuning

I knew this wasn't going to be anything close to audiofile sound or anything, but this isn't worth bothering with at all. I wanted something compact, yet with decent sound because the two I was buying are going to elderly people in care facilities. In a small room space is limited. Based on other reviews I thought this would fit the bill. There is virtually no bass on this boombox. Again, I wasn't expecting thumping bass, and the people they are going to wouldn't care about that anyway. But it's just so tinny it sounds more like a toy.
Additionally, the radio wouldn't pull in several strong radio stations in town - even with various adjustments to the antenna. So, that "feature" is essentially missing.
I also expected, when the specs said it would play CD-R media that I could simply burn a CD-R of MP3s and play it - just like I do in my $50 car stereo and an older bookshelf system I have. Nope. While it may play CD-R media, that disc apparently must be burned with AIFF or other true "audio" files and probably burned as an audio disc. So, that whole end of things becomes a bit more work too. All around a disappointment. (Note: I'm talking about PURCHASED MP3 files from Amazon specifically for the purpose of burning a CD to give away. As a musician, I don't steal music. :-) )
Just to add a little inconvenience to the mix, too, Best Buy had zero of these out to sell, despite having 36 of them on hand. I checked online before I drove all the way across town, and it said "in stock" ready to pick up. But I found only an empty shelf space for this item. That meant waiting for the elusive help. The girl was nice enough, and retrieved two from the back quickly. I suppose this empty shelf could have been due to the Christmas shoppers, but the rest of the shelves looked quite well stocked, and there really weren't tons of people in the store at the time.
What's more, Best Buy has made it far more difficult to choose ANY of their smallish boomboxes, as not a single one is open and on display to try out. They used to have a pretty large area with various models on display. I would take a couple CDs in, try the various models, try their radio, etc. I guess those days are gone . . . along with their music selection. That's nearly gone too. I was going to open one of them and try it out, but I looked around for an outlet and found nothing. So, drive all the way back across town, try it out and discover I just bought two pieces of electronic garbage. :-( Back to the store.
Honestly, I hadn't been in Best Buy in awhile. It looks mainly like a phone/appliance store more than anything else now. A little of this and that thrown in and quite a few TVs at the back. But try to find the portable audio stuff and recorded music. It's a bit of a hunt.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Will this play MP3 recorded CDs?

If I record music on CD-R and CD-RW discs, will those discs play on this box?
It would not play the MP3 files on a CD-R that burned, despite that same disc playing on another bookshelf system and my $50 car stereo. It appears this item might play CD-Rs but only if that disc is burned as a true audio CD.

Is the plug on this a standard plug, or one of those big boxy adapter type plugs?

Looking for something with a regular plug to fit behind a bookcase. Is this one regular or boxy?
Plain ol' two-prong plug. No transformer type adapters.

Is there an automatic replay function allowing the cd to replay over and over.

Does the player have a function which allows a cd to replay over and over on it's own without having to be manually reset ?
It appears so, though I didn't try it myself. There are "random" and "repeat" buttons on the front.

Can I plug headphones into this boombox?

Can I plug headphones into this boombox?
Yes, there is one 1/8" mini headphone jack on the back and one mini "aux in" port.
