Since the V550 comes with Digital Iced for 50-75 dollars less I went with the V550. Didn't need larger format capability. Works great and produces great JPG files from slides that were taken from the early 30's to the late 80's. Cleans up and correct to a point it is easy to fix in photoshop cc with out having to search for every dust mote and scratch. Shot is from Kodak Retina III C in 1970 at sunset. I just fixed the exposure at 1200 DPI. First one out of the box.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Does it have an usb port to upload pictures from the usb?
standard a/b usb cable comes with the scanner. that is how it communicates and it has to be powered also. worth the trade off but keep scanner under 6 feet from the computer. Longer cables seem to cause problems even with the expensive one that are supposedly so great.

Can I scan 35mm slides?
see slide results in my review of this product. Go on You Tube first and make sure you understand the front and back side of the slide..Called emulsion side more dull. Learn this and even if you don't you can tell the software to flip the scan and it will still look great.

Will the V550 work with the new Mac 10.10.5 OS?
Absolutely I use only MAC equipment and have had no issues. I'm at the latest copy of the IOS now but started back before. The software is best used in professional mode but is very easy to understand without a manual.

Will this scanner work without being connected to a pc? Can it save directly to a usb drive?
Not with this scanner.

What size negatives?
Can the Epson V550 scan B&W negatives, and if so, what size negatives are compatible?
35 MM and 2 1/4 square
