What's great about it: price, features, picture quality ,Nikon accessories and lenses are cheaper than canon
What's not so great: wish the LCD was better and had swivel, hey it;s still a great deal
This is a great entry level DSLR ,I have it now for 2 months ,I owned canonXSI before, the picture quality is great, low light performance is excellent. And I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the kit lens. It also autofocus in video, and shoots full HD,though the autofocus in video could be slow in fast moving subjects like my son (Canon T2i,T3i has manual focus only). But this isn't a camcorder, it is good for short clips and record up to 10 minutes at a time.
The limitation are : the LCD is 230k pixel compared to over one milliion in canon T2I,T3I.but you save money with the 3100 which you can use for lenses, and Nikon has great package discounts, also burst mode is on the slow side of 3 fps which is acceptable unless you use it for fast action sports then you may need more advanced DSLR.(T2i has 3.7 fps).
Also you can edit your pictures without using your computer, the guide mode is great if you haven't used DSLR before.

Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 G AF-S DX VR Zoom Lens for Nikon F - Black
Take clearer photographs with this Nikon 18-55mm DX lens. Its 3x zoom covers the most frequently used focal range, while Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave motor provides quick, quiet autofocus. The hybrid aspherical lens element ensures superior resolution by reducing lens aberration. This Nikon 18-55mm DX lens uses vibration reduction technology, which helps you achieve sharper photos in low-light conditions.

What's great about it: price ,quality
What's not so great: NA
this is a kit lens , I bought canon xsi first but was disappointed with its kit lens though the camera was good I returned the xsi and got the Nikon 3100 . The 18-55 kit lens is excellent with very good picture quality autofocus is fast .The only drawback is the plastic mount but it is a kit lens .

What's great about it: price , good quality
What's not so great: average in low light
you get what you pay for , this lens is very good with adequate light , mainly to use in the out side with good sun light ,however indoor quality is average at best. I got this lens as I need a telephoto lens for my kids when they are playing outside , so it works for me .
Autofocus is on the slow side , and build quality is average , I would say the kit lens 18-55 is better .But the bottom line for the price you get a great deal , if you want a better quality I would go for 70-300 and skip the 55-300 , ( all the reviews say the picture quality 55-300 is similar to 55-200 but with it is double the price unless you get a good deal, so if you want to pay more get the high quality 70-300 ...
