What's great about it: Easy to set up, ease of use, great price, e-print abilities
What's not so great: Owned for 2 weeks & so far, nothing bad. Will update after 1 year.
I was skeptical about this printer - after all, I was replacing an HP p.o.s. that I'd had nothing but trouble with from day 1; however, the reviews were good and the price was right. Purchased the first one, got it to the office, ready to set up...and the touch screen did not work! Defective! Back into the box, back to BestBuy and determined that I would NOT be replacing it with another HP. Well, after looking at the printers available & talking to the BestBuy rep, I decided to give HP one last try - and I'm SO GLAD I DID!!! This is, by far, the best printer I've ever owned. I've only had it two weeks, so I can't testify to the longevity, but it is so simple to set up, easy to use (super user-friendly), and has awesome e-print capabilities, that I'm seriously considering getting another one to replace the absolutely fine printer at our shop location. The awesome ability to easily print from any smart phone device, and the fact that this printer will print anything you email directly to it push it way beyond the competition. Out of the box: 10 minute setup, and I was printing, faxing and scanning. Literally, 10 minutes of setup for everything - and I haven't had to mess with the settings since! Once connected to the network (which was also a simple 30-second feat), this baby has its own email address - and anything you email to it from anywhere will print - just like that! Also, nothing to install on smart phones - the capabilities to print from them to this printer is built-in already without having to download & install apps. The print quality is fine - keeping in mind that I'm primarily printing documents, and the printing speed is super-quick. Double-sided printing is a bonus that I don't often use, but it's nice to have the option. I use the scanner more often than anything else, so it was important to me that it was user-friendly, and it certainly is. Fax works great, too - fax directly to & from computer speeds things up considerably & eliminates the need to print a hard copy unless necessary. This baby auto-saves my incoming faxes into a folder I designated & alerts me that I have new faxes. I can then decide whether I need a hard copy or not.
BOTTOM LINE: AWESOME PRINTER WITH AN AWESOME PRICE TAG!!!
About me... Demand high print quality, small business owner, Frequent user, Budget Conscious
I would recommend this to a friend!

Will it work without a wireless set up, i.e. direct connection to the computer?

Yes; however it would be severely overqualified. I do keep the cable plugged into the back just in case the network is down & I need to plug it directly into my computer to print, but had I been looking for something to use primarily without a wireless setup, I think I would probably have downgraded & spent less (even though this is priced right for its capabilities).
