This is by far the worst piece of junk Ive ever purchased. You can see the dvd laser from under the unit. If you know anything about electronics, the fact that anything can get to the laser easy, destroys it quickly. With the limited connections, im out. There is not a phono hookup, I can not even hear the sub. Long story short. Even if I was given this a door prize at a garage sale,....I still wouldn't want it. That's right, its not worth, FREE. Walk away very quickly.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Is the surround sound and "Theater System" only work while a DVD is played?

Hello,
I purchased this item in the store with the help of a store associate. I approached him and explained that I was retired law enforcement and very hard of hearing. I have had to become proficient with subtitles, however, while the use of subtitles has become the norm for me, it really bothers others who try to watch television with me, and subtitles get in the way of other information that may be displayed on the screen (name, organization, etc). But the problem is that I still have the old tube-type televisions. They still work great and I cannot afford the large flat-screen televisions. I asked my son to install/set up the system for me and everything seems to work fine with one exception: the speakers are only utilized while the DVD player is on and playing. Not exactly what I wanted. I would think "Home Theater System" should include the use of the surround sound while watching something on the television (cable programming). Is this correct or am I missing something? If it only works for the DVD player, I would think that the use of the term "Home Theater System" has been used entirely too narrowly here and would consider this a definitive case of false advertisement, not to mention the sales associate not knowing the products sold. So surely I'm not using this right, correct? Any and all help is surely appreciated!
Yes it will work without having to play a dvd. Like if you wanted to use it for TV audio and a video game audio. You don't even have to ever use the dvd and I cant imagine that it would last very long anyway. This is one of the cheapest made units ive ever seen. Im taking mine back and getting the sony BDVE2100 from walmart. If you just looking for a simple and cheap surround sound, then this will make you happy. Or for a dorm room, this would be great. NOT in a large livingroom with high device demand, like tv, xbox, computer, and smart devices.

Rca cables? What are they?

Are RCA cables the red & white for audio & yellow for video?
If this is correct, nobody is stating this for poor customers
having problems. What about a HDMI cable would that
be for audio & video?
HDMI is audio and video. The better the HDMI cable, the better the connection an transfer. YES IT DOES MATTER. Don't let people tell you that all HDMI cables are the same. RCA cables are the red, white, and yellow. There are also HD component cables which are the same as HDMI just in a different plug format. So RCA cables would be the worst connection for video and audio that you could use. That is very old school, but if its all you have, I understand.
