What's great about it: performance, compact size, optical drive, HP service
What's not so great: no backlit keyboard, inconvenient to disable touchpad
I was excited to find this laptop with good hardware, a backlit keyboard and optical drive for a reasonable price, and got it the first day available last week. But after a couple of hours of trying, searching onLine and reading the documentation, I was not able to turn on the backlit keyboard. I contacted HP about this and they responded in about two hours that the 15-g012dx is not shipped with a backlit keyboard and on machines where it is available you toggle it on and off with the f5 key (which has a special icon resembling *---). They also advised that to disable the touchpad (if you prefer to use a mouse), you can either right click on the desktop or go to control panel and select personalize, then change mouse pointers, mouse properties, device settings and disable ( or enable ). I tried this and it works fine but is a little inconvenient. Otherwise, the laptop seems to work great so far. I've not had any other problems and streamed a movie from netflix yesterday ( in SD ) with no pauses. Have not tried to stream HD yet.
