Nikon - AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens - Black
Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55–200mm f/4–5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens: Broaden the scope of your photography with a lightweight zoom lens that offers telephoto coverage for close-up images of distant subjects. Vibration Reduction technology reduces camera shake for dramatically sharp images and HD video, even without a tripod. The broad zoom range is ideal for portraits, action shots and scenic images.

What's great about it: Extremely good optics, price, vr makes it 'faster', light weight
What's not so great: Plastic camera mount
So far (it has only been a couple of weeks), lens is everything I hoped. Quick to focus, light weight, and the VR compensates for my less-than-steady hands. Except for a couple of stops on the higher dollar lenses, cannot see why I would have paid more for any lens in this focal range. Cannot vouch for durability as it has only been in use for a couple of weeks - but it hasn't broken yet. Just wish the camera mount was metal - the plastic seems like it could be a problem spot if I changed out lenses often.
I would recommend this to a friend!

DOES THIS LENSE WORK WITH D40?

This lens is excellent with the D40 (on which I have mine mounted). Also works well on the D60, D3000 and D5000 among others. It is very light weight, so on a light weight camera like the D40 - it balances well.

is this a wide angle lens?

No, this is more of portrait, long distance lense. Digital lenses generally at about 1.5 x the rating for a 35mm film camera lens, and that works out to this being about an 80mm - 300 mm zoom. Nikon makes an excellent 18 - 55mm zoom lens (in both vr and non-vr) which I would highly recommend if you need a good wide angle to normal lens.
