The top filter is washable. The HEPA &Carbon filters needs to be replaced every 2-3 months. The filter item is HS-1938 and can be purchased on the Crane website crane-usa.com

What kind of filter does it require? Does it take tap or distilled water? How do you prevent mineral deposit build-up?

The humidifier does not require a filter unless you have hard water. The filter that will work in the warm mist is HS-1932. Yes you can use tap water as long as you do not have hard water then you would be required to use distilled water. Regular weekly cleaning is the way to prevent mineral deposit. What is the true humidifying capacity range?

The Best Buy website product description states the capacity is up to 500 square feet, but the product owner's manual provided by Crane (PDF download as well as actual Crane website) states humidifying capacity up to 250 sq. ft. My comparison shopping of different models depends on accurate information as to how large a room is covered. Is it actually only up to 250 sq ft? (and while it lists it above as "Red", I am inquiring specifically about the Penelope the Pig design model). Thank you!

How long do these last in package?

I have two filters in the package that are more than five years old. When I turn the filter upside down or shake it, I can hear something rattling around inside of them, like part of the filling inside is loose. Is this how they are when they are new, or do they go bad after a while?

The filters should be soaked prior to use for about 30 mins. This will help to loosen/moisten the particles inside the filter and allow them to work properly.
