Yes, these shelves are removable! There a larger space on the bottom shelves or you can remove shelves to make space for larger bottles.

Are there recommended types/brands of detergent? Can I use pods/tablets?

We do not recommend using pods as those are intended for larger units. We recommend using Powder detergent or liquid detergent.
