Do you need a smart TV to use the 500? Can a seldom used TV be used without affecting a main TV?

Looking at buying the 500. I don't have a Smart TV. Do I need a smart TV? I have a computer and an IPad. How do you stream to the TV? Do I need a Roku or do I just use my computer or IPad or do I need a combination of these? I have an HDMI cable is this needed or can it be used?

Another question is if the sling box is connected to a TV that is seldom used will this affect the program viewing on the main TV that uses the same cable company. The TV's would be on different floors but using the same cable company. Can I watch a different program then the person watching the main TV which would not have a sling box attached to it?

How do you record shows and then view them later? Do I need a DVR hooked up to the TV or sling box?
