The WD - My Cloud 2TB External Hard Drive (NAS) is an network storage device. You attach it to your home wifi network and then you can store data (photos) from your phones, computers, etc via the wifi. Your Apple devices don't directly connect.

if it doesn't have built in wifi then how do you connect with a wireless router?

This unit is not currently WiFi capable. A 3rd party after market wireless adapter could be purchased to make this system WiFi capable.
