Changing Cartridges

My Hp Photosmart 6520 Printer is out of ink. Can I just use a black ink cartridge only? Do I have to replace the colored ones?
The individual cartridges on this model allow you to replace the specific colors as needed. If you are out of all three color cartridges your documents will still print however will only be in black and white.
