One of my 32 year old Bose speakers died. The input controls on my 15 year old Sherwood receiver were becoming twitchy and unreliable (the remote had been useless for years), so I decided to purchase a low end component receiver and this model was on sale that week.
First, the cons: there is no available output for a subwoofer, but I understand that capability can be improvised with one of the 2 speaker set outputs. There is no bluetooth connectivity.
With smart TVs and TV dongles that interface with wifi, you can stream any audio into just one of the available pair of RCA jack inputs. I don't bother with trying to pull in a radio signal because I can stream any station into the receiver with wifi. I can stream out any of the mp3 playlists on my computer in another room in the house to the receiver.
This receiver delivers great sound from this simplified audio interface.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Can these speakers be plugged into an old Panasonic stereo?
My older parents (70+) have an old portable Panasonic portable stereo that they still use to play cassettes. It is the style where the speakers on either side are wired into the back of the radio (with a little clip that you put the wire into). The speakers are junk and they want good Bose speakers to play with this radio/casette player. Would these be compatible? Wireless is not an option for these peeps. Nor is asking them to convert the cassettes to the 21st century technology : )
As long as the radio/cassette deck uses the old stereo lead wire that is applied to all the traditional stereo amp/receivers, these speakers should probably work just fine with it. Some of the old ""boom boxes" were configured with this standard, but not all of them. They put out little wattage comparatively, so you may have to turn the volume up higher than with the original speakers.

are the Bose 161 speakers compatible with a sony str-dh550 receiver?
I have a str dh130 receiver that puts out only 10 watts less per channel and the speakers work fine. Don't be intimidated by the small speaker size. They can deliver at a high range of wattage, clear and crisp ~~ easily the equivalent of much bigger traditional "bookshelf" size speakers from the 80s. BOSE quality probably rivals the "big" sound one expects from many pairs of tower speakers.
