I did a lot of research before replacing my 29-year-old, 22-cubic-foot Amana side-by-side refrigerator, and this LG was definitely the best counter depth machine I could find to fit my galley kitchen. Everything is first rate, from the movable glass refrigerator shelves to the ample compartments in the door. And the machine looks great. My one criticism is the bottom freezer compartment. I think I now have only one-third of the space I had in the side-by-side, and it's taken some getting used to. Also, I have no water hook-up on that side of my kitchen for the automatic ice maker, so I can't use it. I think Best Buy should have mentioned this feature in the literature on their Web site. I didn't see it anywhere. On the plus side, the ice maker takes up a large part of the freezer shelf, and by not using it I can save space with smaller ice cube trays.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I do not need an ice maker or cold water unit; can the refrigerator function w/o this element?

Yes. I also don't need this feature. I removed the ice cube bucket, which is rather large, so I have more room in the freezer drawer. There's a shut-off switch on the ice maker so you can shut it off and forget about it.

Do the doors open one at a trime?

Yes, they open one at a time, but you need to open both if you want to open the deli drawer.
