Apple has steadily improved the iPad, making it lighter, and improving the processor and screen resolution. The 2018 version is basically identical to last year's model, but is 1) cheaper, and 2) has a screen compatible with the Apple pencil. If you need a tablet, it's a great value now.

This unit provides several minutes of backup electricity in case you lose power, with 8 outlets (although only four receive backup power). It's not for power users (no pun intended), but if you want a way to handle brownouts and to safely power down your equipment, it's for you.

The Marvel Studios machine has delivered entertaining & fun action adventure since 2008's Iron Man, and Dr. Strange is no exception. Like Tony Stark, Stephen Strange is a wealthy & talented man consumed by his own ego (Strange is a highly skilled neurosurgeon). After a car accident mangles his hands, Strange travels to Nepal looking for a cure-and discovers a secret society of magicians and sorcerers. The cast led by Benedict Cumberbatch as Strange is top-notch and the visual effects showing the spells the sorcerers cast are excellent. Along with an informative director's commentary and solid extras, the Dr. Strange Blu-ray is great entertainment for any fans of Marvel movies.

The surprise hit of the year so far, Deadpool brings Marvel's meta-superhero to life in glorious fashion. After a brief appearance in a prior X-Men movie in everything about the character but the casting went spectacularly wrong, Ryan Reynolds redeems himself with his hilarious performance of Wade Wilson, a dying mercenary who undergoes a horrific experiment that turns him into a mutant and who must seek revenge on his former captors...with a little help from a couple of X-Men. Despite that plot being stanadard superhero fare, Deadpool sends up the genre with multiple breaks of the fourth wall, ironic commentary, and a bunch of laughs. However, it still delivers solid action.
The Blu Ray contains some very good extras including commentaries featuring Reynolds, the director and writer of the movie, as well as Deadpool's comic book creators. Throw in a SteelBook and it's hard not to justify picking up a copy.

If you have a recent HP printer, it's good news that they went back to using their old 61 cartridges instead of the fancier ones they tried a few years ago. It's very easy to replace and if you're a My Best Buy member, you get 15% off. Good deal overall.

The most anticipated film in many years, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is Disney's first effort at bringing back the legendary franchise after purchasing Lucasfilm. Set 30 years after Return Of The Jedi, Luke Skywalker is missing and in his absence, the First Order has taken the Empire's place, threatening the galaxy. The film brings back many classic characters (mostly notably Han Solo), and introduces a new generation of heroes. All the traditional Star Wars elements are here-perhaps too many, as the film at many points feels like the original Star Wars movie with a fresh coat of paint instead of a bold new direction. But that didn't stop The Force Awakens from breaking all sorts of box office records and if you're a fan, even if you don't love the movie, it's hard not to like. As expected by Disney, the Blu-ray offers spectacular picture and sound, and some very good extras including a full-length making-of documentary and features on John Williams and ILM. Hopefully Episodes 8 and 9 will build on this solid effort.

Director Adam McKay is known for his zany comedies (the Anchorman movies), but he turns to a serious subject by adapting author Michael Lewis's nonfiction bestseller The Big Short, about a group of eccentric investors who noticed the housing bubble in the mid 2000s and bet against it (the "short" in the title). While the film is very funny, McKay is able to demonstrate how a combination of greed recklessness, stupidity, and timidity led to the greatest financial collapse since the Great Depression. An all-star cast led by Christian Bale, Steve Carrell and Brad Pitt is also terrific. You'll laugh, but by the end you'll be fuming at what Wall Street did-and got away with.

Hans Zimmer has been one of Hollywood's best composers for decades, and cemented his legacy with the scores to Chris Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, as well as the Superman reboot Man of Steel. For the sequel, which introduces Batman and Wonder Woman into a new universe, he teams up with DJ and rising composer Junkie XL. Combining some of Zimmer's score from Man of Steel with new themes, the music transitions from somber to frenetic to heroic, as a score for a film like this should. Zimmer recently stated his retirement from superhero music, but he leaves on a high note, and Junkie XL is in position to continue his legacy.

Steven Spielberg's most recent film focuses on a lawyer (played by Tom Hanks) recruited to defend a Soviet spy, and who later must orchestrate a deal to trade his client for captured American pilot Francis Gary Powers (who was shot down in the famous U2 Spy Incident). The film captures the anti-Communist paranoia of the 1950s and the value of diplomacy in attempting to deal with global conflict. Great performances by Hanks and the entire cast. Decent extras round out a very good blu-ray.

"Spotlight," based on the journalism of the Boston Globe in investigating child abuse (and the subsequent cover-up) by the Catholic Church richly deserved the Oscar for Best Picture. Low key direction by Tom McCarthy and terrific performances by a great cast (led by Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, and Liev Schreiber) tackle a difficult subject in a respectful manner that clearly demonstrates the vital importance of investigative journalism. The only problem with the blu-ray are the fairly paltry extras, but well worth a purchase on the strength of the film.
