The harmony smart control is an awesome device if you have the patience to set it up properly. For anyone looking to get rid of their remote clutter and have name brand electronics, it could be very easy to setup. However, I wanted this device to do much more than just turning my TV on and off. I wanted it to control LED lights and my computer running XBMC. After spending hours upon hours I was able to do just that. The customization this device can give you is limitless. I also have a VeraLite, which has a plugin that will allow you to control the Harmony Smart Control with your Vera and set up automated scenes. Like if I walk into my house and deactivate the alarm, Vera can tell the Harmony Smart Control to turn on my sound system and put some music on through XBMC on the computer. The capabilities of this device are endless, however it requires lots of trial and error. For the typical user, I feel like the Harmony Smart Control hub may be overkill, but for someone looking to add advanced functionality to their media center devices the Harmony Smart Control is the way to go. I absolutely love this device and would recommend it to anyone. For anyone interested in full review and how to integrate it into a home theater PC/Vera subscribe to QwertyTech on youtube for tutorials. I will post some videos there in a few weeks.
I would recommend this to a friend!

can you use more than one remote

I want to use 4 remotes with the Harmony Smart Control on 4 different TV's all hooked to one cable box located in the basement.
Technically speaking, this can be done. But, it would take a ton of work. First off the TV would need line of sight with the HUB in order to receive it's IR blast. However, it does come with two ports for you to run IR sensors to devices that are hidden from view. This would be your first problem because you want to control 5 devices that are not in close proximity with the hub (4 tv's and a cable box). You could purchase IR splitters, so it's technically possible. Next, you would have to do a ton of programming on the remote to be able to control all of the different TV's and the cable box. The remote has 3 "activities" buttons and 4 other "favorite" buttons and they are also short and long press programmable. So you can program a button to turn on TV 1 with a short place and TV 2 with a long press. All of this is possible, but incredibly time consuming and almost more cumbersome than just having a remote in every room. Hope this helps.

Can I use this to control lighting and open a door?

I have a German door that can be operated electronically. I want to be able to unlock my door and turn certain lights on from my Apple iPhone just before arriving home. Does this system do that and how does it work? What do you need to make it work?
Unfortunetly, this system is not capable of turning on lights or unlocking doors (unless the door or light uses infrared as it's communication medium, which is very unlikely.). However, you can look into a system like Vera which has those kinds of capabilities and you can control it with your iPhone. You can ever add geofencing capabilities so when you are arriving home it will do what you want it to. I would look into Vera or SmartThings for what you are looking for. I will say that this device is a nice addition of the Vera, so it's definitely something to consider.

Pod hook up.

Is a HDMI hook up on the TV required for the pod on this remote.
No. The Hub only requires a power source which is done through a micro usb cable. There are two other ports for additional IR sensors if you have your receiver hidden behind a cabinet. In fact, it includes one of the said IR sensors. Very convenient.
