Lan line seems to be no issue. WiFi even with one device connected seems to constantly drop signal. Have tried with several different devices. Overall not too bad since I really don't use the built in WiFi router too often.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Can SBG6580 wireless modem be hooked to phone line internet instead of coaxial cable

No, this is a cable modem. You will need to buy a dsl modem.
