This system was being used for a back of house computer for point of sale systems. We simply maxed out the RAM to 8GB (it has 1 slot available, so make sure you get a 8GB stick), and cloned the data over to a Samsung SSD. Following those steps the system was very fast for our purposes.

When I do tech work on point of sale systems with limited USB ports, this keyboard/trackpad combo is a godsend!
It's far worth paying a little extra to get this one vs the cheapo off brand versions.
I haven't tried the Microsoft version of this, however I bet it's fairly good as well.
Logitech consistently makes good keyboards and mice -- occasionally you get a bunk one but overall they're great quality.

If you need more storage than the typical portable drives (2TB), this is a good step up.

Can I get this with Windows 7?
I doubt you can from Best Buy, however at this point I wouldn't recommend attempting the downgrade or custom purchase unless there's a SERIOUS incompatibility with software.
To get Windows 8.1 to work like Windows 7 you can either wait for Windows 10 to come out, or follow these steps:
By running Windows 8.1 you can choose to go to the desktop, then right click the bar along the bottom and get into the properties, then click navigation near the top.
Enable the various options under there and one in particular will let the system boot back to the desktop.
Following those steps you can get your start menu working like the good old days by going to www.classicshell.net and downloading/installing the free ClassicShell.
I prefer Windows 8.1 with those options to Windows 7 as the performance is better and there's a lot of subtle improvements.
Enjoy!

Does WD stand for Western Digital. AC powered Hard Drives are faster than just USB?
Yes, WD does stand for Western Digital.
Desktop based drives (like this one) are typically faster than portable drives, so yes this drive would be faster than the typical portable drive that's powered only by USB.

It is however you'll want to erase the drive so you can use it properly.
Open Disk Utility (inside the applications--> utilities), then select the drive on the sidebar.
Click on the partition tab near the top of the screen, then choose 1 partition.
Click the options button in the lower left and select the top most item.
Then give your drive a name, like 'Backup".
Finally, click Apply.
All set for mac!

Can this provide auxiliary storage for a DirecTV DVR, using a SATA cable?
DirecTV DVR's have SATA ports that enable external drives to be connected. The DVR will format the drive, and the hard drive inside the DVR will be inaccessible while the external drive is connected. Does this drive have an SATA port, and does it come with an SATA cable?
This drive only comes with USB 3.0

Do these drives work with any operating system? I use Windows 7.
This will work perfectly on Windows 7.
You can use it out of the box without reformatting it, or you're welcome to load up the western digital software if you want it to auto backup and give you other options for the drive.

Does a laptop provide enough power or is it only compatible with a desktop running power from a PSU?...
It will work with a laptop or desktop computer, however you will need to use the included power adapter in order to provide enough power for the drive.
Only portable hard drives are able to get enough power via the USB 2/USB 3 cable.
