These were originally installed a few years ago, excellent speakers. We had to replace because a Kidde fire extinguisher was on the floor, below the speaker, and the valve blew off and shot the speaker. Ripped out wires and terminals, whole house was covered in fire extinguisher chalk. Beware of fire extinguisher with plastic valves. Otherwise no issues with speakers, just understand they are sold in pairs, and they are directional.(right and left).

What's great about it: Backup capabilities

What's not so great: A bit heavy

Great unit. We live in a rural area where the utility power is very unreliable. With this unit, everything stays on during power blinks. With the full home theater on, it will run for about 33 minutes.

wattage rating compatibility

can these Bose 161's be used as the only speakers (yes, just 2 speakers for now) with a 140-w per channel receiver? will the 40-w rating difference between receiver and these speakers be too much? will I blow the speakers?

They will work fine, when you crank up the volume, you can tell when they will blow. sound gets distorted. Know the limitations.

Use of 161 as front speaker with a Acoustimass 10 IV

Since I have a spare set of Bose 161, I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to chance the Dual-cube frontspeakers with the 161's? Perhaps it would give an even better sound?

Will not work, Bose systems, like the one you are speaking of, has all the brains in the subwoofer. The 161 set will work with a standard amplifier/receiver.
