Simple to install on both Dell and HP PCs. Works fine. Reasonably quiet.

500Gb Pata IDE hard drive availability

I'd like to get a new 3.5 500gb pata ide hard drive for my xp computer. Don't laugh, I do have a Win7 laptop, but a lot of my XP software either doesn't work or works poorly under Win7. Know that MS is killing their XP support in April, so I want a clean hard drive with all the latest XP upgrades before the support goes away. Much cheaper than buying all the new software to run on Win7, and don't even think about suggesting Win8. Have yet to find a single person with a laptop that cares for it.
You can certainly do that with ease; however, I would question your decision to keep running XP. If cost is an issue, you might want to switch to Ubuntu. It doesn't work perfectly with every single program but it's free, and I'd suspect that if you are using XP vintage programs Ubuntu would be compatible.
