I had a little difficulty setting it up... it didn't clearly explain the modes... although it tried. Also, I thought it was 5GHz when I bought it...my bad, but could have been better marked on the package. Otherwise it works well.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I will be in a hotel for a week, will this device help boost wifi in the hotel room

Not unless they allow you to get it onto their network. You essentially need admin privileges for the router you are connecting to to set it up.
