Using the Harmony Hub , MyHarmony Windows application, Amazon Echo and IFTTT, I'm able to control my entertainment system with voice (e.g., "Alexa, trigger watch TV"). I haven't used the included remote yet.

Yes, it does. That's exactly how I use it. With the MyHarmony application, I add devices and activities, connect MyHarmony as an IFTTT channel, then add a recipe with Alexa to turn on or off the different activities.

Do you need to use the app to control devices in cabinets

It looks like you can use blue tooth from your smart phone/ipad etc to control hidden devices but can the remote control also control dvd players and other devices behind closed doors?

It doesn't use bluetooth. It connects to your home network and then has an included IR blaster that you can place inside your cabinet. If you need an additional IR blaster, you can purchase that separately. So yes, you can control devices behind closed doors.

Does this unit work with Comcast Xfinity desktop boxes

Comcast says it DOES NOT, curious if anyone tried it.

I have an HD Xfinity (Cisco) RNG150N box that I was able to add as a device. So I would have to guess it depends on the model of your set top box.
