Rather than pay $10+/month to rent a modem from Comcast, I decided to buy my own. This model happened to be the least expensive DOCSIS 3.0 modem at my local Best Buy, so I picked one up and was amazed to see how small and discrete it looked next to the monstrous eye-sores Comcast burdens all its customers with. After a reasonably pain-free phone call to Comcast, my new modem was active sending and receiving data at the full speed of my account's 105Mbps bandwidth cap. After almost 3 months, I have had no problems at all and couldn't be any more pleased. This modem will have paid for itself after 4 more months, but removing that huge, ugly Comcast unit from my desk has made this a worthwhile purchase anyway!
I would recommend this to a friend!

Is this compatible with MAC OS?

I have a iMac and currently renting a cable modem from Atlantic BB. Would like to purchase my own and have wireless router built in. Best Buy tech suggested this to me, however when I reviewed the specs only mentions Windows for System requirement. Does anyone know if it will work with my iMac?
Yes, this will work just fine if you have a Mac (or any other operating system, for that matter). A modem/router is a stand-alone device that doesn't require anything to be installed on your computer - you can access the modem/router configuration through whatever web browser your system has installed.

Are there parental controls for this?

I have 5 kids and would like to individually set restrictions and times. For some reason, I am having a very hard time finding something like this that is also compatible with my time warner cable. Help.
There are a lot of different ways to accomplish this, and finding something "compatible with Time Warner" (or any other cable company) is not an issue - in this case, which provider you use (Comcast vs. Time Warner, or even DSL vs. Cable or Satellite) is completely irrelevent.

This article explains a few ways to implement parental controls: http://www.howtogeek.com/167545/4-ways-to-set-up-parental-controls-on-your-home-network/
For the sake of simplicity, if you have WIndows 7 or 8, try those options first, otherwise a third-party software solution will probably work best. The router-based option is the most complex and least flexible, so I'd recommend against it unless you already have a router with parental controls and you know how to access your router's configuration.

comcast

What kind of modem do need to buy to replace a Comcast modem.[I want to save the monthly charge}
Any cable modem that supports the DOCSIS standard will work with Comcast - but keep in mind that DOCSIS 2.0 is limited to a single channel, so you will be stuck at <40mbps. If you're paying for speeds faster than that (or plan to at any point in the future) you'll want to get a DOCSIS 3.0 modem.

Also bear in mind that many Comcast customers have a modem that also includes a "router," meaning it has built-in wifi and connections for multiple wired devices. I prefer to keep my router and modem separate, but if you like the simplicity of a single unit (or aren't sure how to set up a dedicated router) you'll want to make sure you buy a modem with wifi/router built-in.
