Having used a Tivo for the last ten years, I was inclined to purchased an updated unit ;namely the Roamio,, since the Series 3 unit i had upended and died after some good usage. I was impressed with the faster processor now included in the hardware. This allowed for faster access to the new features the Roamio now contains. First, the all new designed UI is in HD; for a nicer, sharper picture. Second, the video can be set up to 1080p, in addition to the established 720p and 1080i formats. Third, the You Tube app is now faster than the previous release. This allows for a smooth search and sign in when viewing videos. Fourth, the Hulu Plus app is the most current one in use today. The only negative I have is regarding the MLB.TV app. It seems that whenever I am done watching a baseball game and want to return to "Live TV," the app won't let me do so in a clean way. Instead, it announces on a screen graphic that "due to copyright restrictions, the live program cannot be viewed at this time." Since then, I have notified Tivo regarding this matter. Overall, this is a pretty good unit. Not in any way excellent, since it does not allow you to have both OTA and cable channels at the same time as say the Tivo HD Series 3, but much better than past previous Tivos. If you are a "cord-cutter," wanting to create your own programming schedule or a current cable subscriber, not wanting to use your cable company's generic DVR, than the Roamio is for you. But remember, if you use it either way, be sure to purchase a good rooftop antenna or include a CableCard with your programming subscription.
I would recommend this to a friend!

apartment living

My apartment uses a satelite stream for tv , I have no cablee boxes.ccn I use the tivo on my tv, I currently have a smart tv vizio.cannot recor X shows at all right now.
No. A Tivo Roamio is ONLY good for use with an OTA (Over the Air) antenna, such as a rooftop antenna or a set top antenna (aka "rabbit ears") or a current cable subscription (with or without digital channels included) But keep in mind that in order to receive "digital cable channels" such as most HD networks, either premium or non premium, you will need a cablecard that can be provided by your cable provider for a small monthly fee. If your apartment complex uses satellite, you will need to inquire if the provider is Direct TV and NOT Dish Network, since a Tivo will NOT work with Dish Network.. If Direct TV is your provider, contact them to see if you can lease a Direct TV Tivo DVR.

Subscription required?

Yes a subscription is required in order to have access to record and use the various Tivo features. You can purchase a monthly subscription at $14.99 or a lifetime subscription at $499.99. Keep in mind that a lifetime subscription is only applicable to the life of the unit you purchase the lifetime subscription on. It is NOT transferable to another unit you may purchase or acquire in the future.
