I mostly, after reading reviews, purchased this one so that i could extend the range of my wifi in my home and for streaming video services such as Netflix. It is kind of big and bulky, but it does exactly what i need it to do. The router is installed upstairs towards the front of my home and my television is downstairs towards the back of my home. I have a 3000ft two story home. I am using a DSL internet service which is at 15Mbps max. The modem has definitely improved the signal strength throughout the house especially for the streaming video. I have virtually eliminated the loading issues with Netflix and Amazon prime by upgrading to this modem. To a lesser extent, for my portable devices, the signal strength is excellent throughout my home not just in certain spots as before. With my older model i could get great signal strength for my portable devices, but not for the television, depending on where i was in the home. Very easy set up as well. You will need to be somewhat computer literate though. It doesn't come straight out of the box ready to go. The instructions were easy enough to understand and follow. I definitely think that it is worth the price as well. i am very happy with it.

when being used as a media server will the second AC-2400 still act as a range extender?

I'm contemplating getting a second one to use as a media server to consolodate the music and digital movies i've bought over the years so i can watch them throughout the house. But there are some points on one side of the house where the signal gets weak and unreliable weather i'm using the 2.4 or the 5ghz frequency so i was wondering if having the 2nd AC-2400 in media server mode would still allow it to act as a range extender or if it would have to remain close to to first router to act as the media server.

I would purchase a powerline range extender that plugs into the electrical outlets in your home. Less expensive and work great. Linksys and Netgear make them. Check online reviews first before purchasing though.
