What's great about it: Performance, reputation
What's not so great: Just a little pricey ....
My review is based more on past experience with APC products, than the actual performance of this particular item. It's hard to provide a really comprehensive review on an item designed for many years' use, after only a month or so. BUT....
This UPS has performed well, so far. My experience with other UPC products extends back 20-ish years. In that time, I've never had a less-than-positive experience with a wide array of APC products, used with everything from laptop computers to servers, to communications equipment. Just as with any product of this type, I've had to replace batteries--again, after years of use--but that's just a standard occurrence. I've never had an APC unit fail, and I've never suffered loss of equipment or data because of an issue with any of these products. I've bought a lot of 'em in the past, and I'll probably look to APC products in the future.
I would recommend this to a friend!

i have a new 55" smart tv - & directv box - looking to protect
Yes, this will provide surge protection, but it will NOT provide any significant viewing time during a power outage.

software

Does this come with a cd for software install
Yes. But, if all you want is basic UPS capabilities, you won't need any software. Just plug in the unit, plug in your computer, and you're covered. You need the software only if you want your UPS and your computer to communicate with each other--for example, you want your computer to shut down gracefully, or enter a hibernation state. The included software CD accommodates several versions of Windows, and also has a version for Macs.

Is this compatible with all systems?

I have a Dell xps & windows 8...
If you just want it to act as a simple UPS, there's no need for any software installation. If you want your computer to interact with the UPS, you'll need to install APC-provided software. The unit comes with an installation CD, with software for various Windows versions, and for MACs.

Does it have a power outage alarm/beep?

My present battery back-up system has a piercing beep that sounds every minute or two while the power is out. Very disturbing, especially middle of night. Does the APC-Back-UPS 700VA Battery Back -Up System have an alarm system of any sort, and if so, what?
Yes. But, the alarm can be muted after you're aware of the power interruption. That's a good sanity feature. ;-)

I have a back-up generator for my office, however when power goes out and switches to the generator, my computer turns off and won't turn back.

So I can not access my computer remotely, will this keep the computer on without shutting down?
It will. HOWEVER, your computer's run-time will depend on the power-draw of your computer AND any peripheral equipment needed to keep it up. If you want to continue computing for any length of time, you'll need a UPS with more capacity. However, if you only want to keep your computer up long enough for your generator to come on line, this item might do the trick for you. Again, it depends on how much power draw your computer has, both directly and with its required peripherals.

Will this unit work as a surge protector?

Yes. This product is actually multifunctional. Half of the outlets provide both back-up AND surge protection. The other outlets provide surge protection only. They're clearly marked as to which provide both functions, and which provide only surge protection.

Based on 20+ years of experience with APC products, I've never suffered either data loss or equipment damage because of a malfunctioning APC product
