I'm 64 and never owned a laptop. Can I get new one ready to use?

I browse the internet, use AOL email, download and send pictures, use for information, want to hook up a printer/fax/xerox/scanner to it, need spyware and protection, download PDF documents, do NOT play games, save stuff I get off sites, do not watch TV, need wireless, can fix itself if I mess up, does not have to be super fast.
Would this be good laptop for me? Can someone put in all the stuff I said I needed before sending it to me so it's ready to use? Does it cost extra?

This laptop will do much more than what you say you need it for. I would look for a cheaper model. You should understand two things before sinking any money into a new laptop. Windows 8.1 will come with spyware and virus protection and it is an OS that can be refreshed by the end user easily. No need to pay someone. Second, you need to make sure your printer will work with windows 8.1. Old printers may not have drivers.

how much actual usable ram?

how much ram do you REALLY get to use ? I'm betting you are not able to access the full 256 gb but correct me if I am wrong.

256gb is hdd capacity not ram size.

I need to connect to an ethernet cable, shat converter should I use?

Do all rj45 to USB converter's work with this computer?

It just needs to compatible with windows to work. Better off getting a wireless router.
