What's great about it: As long as there is WiFi I can use it anywhere
What's not so great: Television cannot be used when accessing slingbox
I purchased this products b/c I wanted to be able to access movies, television, etc when I was not home. I looked into movie streaming plans, but paying monthly for a service when I already had cable and every movie channel seemed superfluous. Also the selections of movies and television from those services where old.
When I found out about a Slingbox I was eager to try it. The set up was pretty simple, even for a novice with electronics as myself.
I have used it a few times, and it works just as I would expect. I can access anything on my television, the same as if I were sitting at home. I can get into on demand, DVR, etc.
The Slingbox is just like using the tv regularly. With that said, if you are using the slingbox, the television it is hooked up to cannot be used by someone else at the same time.
There is an app that can be purchased 14.99 if you want to use the slingbox on a tablet. If you use a computer or laptop you just watch through your account on the website and it is free.
I personally love this product. It works like a streaming service, but overall it is a better value, I would rather access my on demand and DVR than watch old movies and shows.

If I hook up sling box to my tv, can i watch on any laptop without downloading an app?

I don't think you need to download an app for the computer. I have a slingbox and have used a few different laptops to watch. The Ipad required a downloaded app.
