This was available for just over $100 at the time and provides a 2 TB USB drive with plenty of room for data, pictures and other files. It is a little smaller than formerly purchased Toshiba USBs and run very quickly.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Does this drive need to be partitioned in order for Vista or W7 to recognize it?

I didn't have to do any partitioning at all. Just plug it into a USB slot

Can I use this interchangeably between windows vista and windows 8.1?

I want to back up all my files from an old PC with Windows Vista into this external hard drive. Will I be able to pull out the files using a new laptop with a Windows 8.1 readily or do I need to do any reformatting?
It worked for me on XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 systems without doing any formatting.
