What's great about it: Traffic reporting
What's not so great: Wish it would see the "bird" a bit faster
I like this model as it really helps to distinguish between rodways that are close and running in parallell that older units would or could not distinguish. I love the traffic reporting as it provides opportunity to find alternate routes before you are stuck in a traffic nightmare.

is there an app that shows a simple compass?

Haven't checked but it will give lat., long., and elevation.

Does this model allow me to choose the route I want to take so I can avoid certain areas/roads? If it does, how easy is it to do?
Yes, but it isn't as easy to use as just punching in addresses.
