I was excited to purchase this router. Unfortunately the design and implementation are not there yet. This router runs hot; very hot. Without a laptop cooling fan underneath it, mine would hit 180 F. Also, the router would stop working randomly and would require a restart . I think the heat is a design issue as the router does not have adequate ways for the heat to dissipate. As for the restarts, it may have been related to the heat. End result is that I returned it and got the AC68U instead for $100 cheaper. For reference, I had updated to the latest firmware and wasn't doing anything other than using it as an AP. When it did work, the coverage was good and solid.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

What are the product differences between the RT-AC87R and the RT-AC87U?

Also, I would like to know the differences between the RT-AC87U and the RT-AC3200

There is no difference, hardware wise, between the AC87R and the AC87U. "R" is sold in retail stores while "U" is sold online. I suspect it allows stores to not have to Price Match because the model numbers are not the same.

As for the AC87U and the AC3200. The 3200 is the next model up from the AC87U. The AC87U is also called the AC2400.
