hello- these headphones are pretty sensitive, a portable amp is not required. you could always add one later if you wanted more volume beyond what it is capable of.

can i use these with an ipod?

i was looking into these because i am tired of always having cords hang down from me.....i was wondering if i could use these with an ipod nano....no bluetooth but is there an extension to plug into the headphone jack?

Yes, you can simply plug the transmitter's audio cable into the headphone plug of the nano (adapter is included with the wireless headphones) and then the audio is broadcast wirelessly to the headphones. Its easy to do.

Impedance

I see the impedance is 64 ohms can these headphones be powered well by standard equipment say 3.5mm jacks on laptops, mp3 players etc. or would a headphone amp be recommend?

The impedance is indeed 64 ohms, however, the HD 280 is very sensitive and works great with low output devices.
