Scanner Works Great, Software is Antiquated

I purchased this scanner for multiple reasons. I enjoy photographing on both 35mm and medium format film, and wanted to be able to save money when processing by scanning my own negatives. This scanner does a great job at scanning both, and offers a good amount of dynamic range from the negatives (DMax of 3.4). Other more expense scanners offer a DMax of 4.0 (And maybe higher), but at a significant price increase. The next and main reason I bought this scanner was to scan my immediate family's library of 35mm film, as well as my extended family's one-of-a-kind photo prints dating back to the early 1900s and, even some earlier, I believe. The scanner does a great job and produces great scans. Probably as good as the average person will need, and even does will under professional scanning (how I am using it). While it's not the very best you can get, it's certainly well geared towards enthusiast/semi-pro level scanning and archiving. If you need the absolute best for archival, you need to look into a commercial scanner, or the V850. This will definitely get the job done for the vast majority of people, including those looking to shoot on film still today. The Epson software is horribly out of date, though, so don't expect that aspect to blow your mind. It works though, and that is what is important. I believe the software is from the early 2000's, and looks like it. It does run and work fine on my 2014 5K iMac, running macOS 10.13.4 (latest at the time of this review), so you should be good to go on any modern platform of macOS or Windows.

This is a fantastic computer, with cutting edge I/O that is sure to last many years for many types of users. If you work with graphics, photos, videos, and illustration, this a great upgrade from a lot of older Macs, but it could be worth weighing the additional cost to performance with the 15" models with dedicated GPUs, higher core count, and more RAM.

These are basically a standard product nowadays. 4TB is a great amount of backup storage for Time Machine use or for extended storage and back up for your needs. This product is a bit bigger in physical size than the old version as the enclosure is squared. They are also more stackable because of this and have a more modern look. Drives work great and area good price.

Do I need a CD drive to set up the scanner and use it? I have a newer iMac with no way to read disks.
I also use an iMac with no disc drive. You can download the Epson software from their site. Make sure you're up to date on macOS and locate the scanner on their site to get the right software version. The software works on macOS 10.13.x, though it is SUPER old.

do scanned photos go to a memory card?
There is no memory card slot on the scanner. It scans to a save location of your choice on your connected computer. I have it save to the desktop, in a folder for each project on my Mac.

Auto Cropping feature: If I place 4 photos on the scanner, will it crop and save all 4 as individual files? or is this limited to 1 file?
