The good: super fast loading of Amazon content (whatever you choose starts in a split of second), the voice search feature is excellent, you just name a movie, series, actor, director, and all the relevant information pops up instantaneously.
The bad: super fast loading only good for Amazon content but the device is still fast overall. Again, voice search only works for Amazon content, it doesn't search across other services like Netflix, HBO GO, HuluPlus, etc.
The ugly: limited availability of apps, specially those that compete with Amazon Prime. There is no VUDU or any other service for your Ultra-Violet library. There is no Slacker radio, no Tune In radio, no Warner Movie Archive (great subscription service if you like to watch old movies and series) and the list goes on and on...
My opinion: If you are into the Amazon ecosystem, this is the box for you, the interface is great, voice searching works like a charm and shows load in a split of second. I'm also sure Amazon will try to increase the number of apps but, as of right now, this it is not ready for primetime.

TV
would this product make it possible to view programs on a TV that is NOT connected to my server, that is Verizon?
You need an internet connection (wired or wireless) to use the Fire TV box. You'll also need a free HDMI input on the back of your TV so you can connect the box.

TIVO
I will not buy any product that does not permit me to keep using TIVO. So, my question is, can I hook up Amazon-Fire TV and use it in addition to TIVO?
Yes, you can continue to use TIVO. You'll need to connect the Fire TV to a free HDMI input on the back of your TV. You can then alternate between your TIVO box and the Fire TV box.
