Do the rear speakers need to be amplified and plugged into the wall separately in order for the system to work? A Best Buy employee at the store said that my rear speakers have to be powered speakers.

I have two of these. One is connected to my powered (active) speakers and the other is connected to my passive speakers. They both work great. I do get less volume with the passive speakers.
