I already had the Harmony Ultimate for my main TV setup but really wanted another for the basement. Added this for the kids in the basement and now I can remotely control the TV from my cell phone too. Works great when the kids forget to turn things off. Harmony system allows my to hide all my devices too.

can you connect a wired sub woofer & speakers together

Not sure exactly what you mean. I have a Klipsch system and I can connect the sub with left and right channels that will filter the lows to the satellite speakers attached to it. With the Sonos connect amp I have my satellite speakers connected to the left and right channels on it and the sub to the subwoofer port (RCA) - usually when only 1 RCA connect to right channel on sub. I used a splitter for both channel inputs into the sub.

does the amp need to be hard wired to the internet

Does the system need to be hard wired through the ethernet cable?

If you have a Sonos Boost or another Sonos speaker hard wired then no, but if you plan to use only this device then it would need to be hardwired to connect to the internet. At a minimum you have to have at least one Sonos device hard wired so that it can create the Sonos wireless network.
