Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Standard Lens: A perfect everyday lens for any photographer, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G offers fast autofocusing combined with an integrated lens coating to deliver clear and crisp images. The wide-open aperture is ideal for low-light shooting and creating images with beautiful background blur.

As always Nikkor is a superb lens

Had a problem with the lens fitting (machining issues) bestbuy replaced immediately and all is well, as for Nikkor there's not much to say, they are the best chunk of glass you can get for Nikon cameras.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Does this lens work with the D5000? What is the best 50mm to get?

Can't speak about the D5000, it does work with the D7000.
As for the best lens, Nikkor is top shelf when it comes to lenses and past that you want the lowerest F number with the greatest spread, F1.8 is great for both pro and hobby
