This does what it is supposed to do. The setup is easy, the app is a bit slow so just have patience and let it do its thing. I hope in newer iterations they make it a bit less bulky.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Using WeMo switch with an extension cord

Are the any problems with using the WeMo switch with an extension cord? For example, to power on two lights at the same time?
There is not any problem with using an extension cord or power strip. It will just control all items at the same time. I have my tv and sound system plugged into a power strip, that is plugged into the Wemo switch. I then can tell the Amazon Echo to turn my tv on/off and it will control both my sound system and TV at the same time.

can you turn a thermostat up or down

I can turn a thermostat up or down, but a Wemo switch only provides on and off functionality to something that is plugged into it. So it could turn a space heater on or off.

Yes. I personally have my echo controlling 9 different devices from the Philips and Wemo product lines.
