trendnet 424 ub
I bought an old dell that included a trendnet 424ub wireless adaptor. I live in a housing complex that supplies free wifi. My screen shows that I have 100% signal strength and link quality and my tx rate usually remains strong but my data rate is low to nonexistant, sometimes I time out just trying to get my home page. What can I do to improve this?
Feeling a Little Congested?
Depending on the make up of your neighborhood, you may be experiencing wireless interference or suffering from network congestion. If you have access to a Android phone, there is a free app call Wi-Fi Analyzer (there are others available with similar capabilities) that will show you available networks and the channel(s), 11 possible - ranging from channel 1-11). The housing complex wireless access points, more than likely are on channel 1, 6 or 11. Why is this important, those are the most common out of the box WiFi channel settings and more than likely if there are other wireless access points (WAPs) in the area, they are configured the same and "fighting for dominance of the air waves".
What can you do? Talk to the IT person of the housing complex about changing the default WAP channel to an open frequency range (refer back to the WiFi Analyzer results for unused channels or to a channel that others WAPs are on whose signal is not a strong as yours). Another option, depending on the location of the WAP, the housing complex may need an additional access point to increase the coverage (this probably does not apply because you said the signal is strong). Other than that, get closer to the access point for a stronger connection or if a physical Ethernet port is available, connect directly to the router or network which will eliminate potential interference and congestion issues.
Hopefully this helps you out with your dilemma.
