Re: modem plug in

There is already a cable plugged into ethernet port on my modem. Do I take that out and plus in the Belkin N300 cable?
Ethernet cable coming out of your modem must go into the input port of the router.

Can I use this router with windows 8 ?

Even though the spec on the router does not mention Win 8, I would assume that should not matter, cuz once connected and internet is broadcasting, you should be able to access using PC/laptop/tablet/phone

Do you need to have internet to use this?

I currently do not have any internet access, and I am looking for something that is cheap, and wireless at the same time.

Can I connect without using the CD?

My computors CD is not working, Is there still a way I can install with my desk top so I can use with a new lap top?
In most cases, you would not require to install anything on your PC, but in case you do need to - you can do that on any machine and once internet is set up - you should be able to access Wi-Fi from any machine.

Will it allow VPN connection?

I need to access my work using VPN. Will I have to worry about any firewall etc. to get the connection working?
Router does not configure any firewall automatically to block anything. In most likelihood, once you are connected to internet, you should be able to connect onto VPN as long as the settings on the machine (desktop/laptop) you are connecting allows it

Two side by side computers are used.

The solid green light in front sometimes turns red- maybe once a month or so thereby I lose me internet. I disconnect cables, including the power and re-connect, and sometimes the green bar goes on and sometimes not. I disconnect again and sometime or other, it turns green. Is the router bad or something? Or is there something else you can suggest that might help?

There could be multiple reasons to the problem, but I suggest that whenever you have intermittent internet issues, disconnect the router then disconnect modem, wait 20 seconds, then reconnect modem, wait 3 minutes and then reconnect router in sequence rather than at the same time. This should help clear the DNS buffers and reset properly giving you proper connectivity.
