What's great about it: Easy to use, comfortable
What's not so great: Nothing so far
I bought these earbuds specifically for the noise reduction function for an upcoming flight to the east coast. They exceeded my expectations. They were terrific for pure engine noise reduction (while sleeping) and the sound quality of my music was wonderful. Pure bliss being able to drown out the relentless engine drone. Also tried using them on BART. They certainly reduced a lot of the clatter, especially going through the tunnels, but not completely. However, better on than off! Yes, they were expensive, but oh so worth it. The little unit which comes with it is a little irksome but I decided to put all extraneous wires and the unit back into the carrying case and I just held on to that while using the earbuds. It was just fine.

Plugging jack into devices -- or not -- for just using noise cancellation

If I just want to tune out my obnoxious upstairs neighbors and not listen to any music, can I simply turn on the noise canceling earbuds without plugging them into my iPhone (or any other device)? Will the active noise cancellation still work if not plugged into a music player or other device? My primary purpose will be noise cancellation (not music listening) and I want something I can comfortably wear around the house -- without always needing to be tethered to my iPhone -- while I count the months until my lease expires. Thanks. ... and never rent a downstairs apartment.
Yes, they work well not plugged into anything. They may not completely drown out talking but they definitely reduce the sound. At the Best Buy where I bought them I could have returned them (used) within 15 days and got a full refund. That made me much more comfortable about buying them.
