Other than, of course, XP Professional VLK. But Win 7 Pro is noticably faster.
Installation was pretty much idiot-proof as usual, but I build systems using HD trays which makes it easy to pop in a new SATA drive and set it up. The only glitch this time was that the online activation failed, and I had to do the phone call in thing. No biggie.
I would recommend this to a friend!

This has worked fine so far in my multimedia quad-core system. The continuous output is less than 520 watts - that's the peak power. But it's super quiet, has lots of plugs, and the price was right.

Windows 7 Home Premium With Service Pack 1 64-bit - License and Media - 1 PC - Windows
Windows 7 Home Premium offers the best entertainment experience on your PC, making the things you do every day easier. With fewer clicks, faster searching, easier browsing, and simpler ways to connect, there's less between you and what you want to do.

Works fine, somewhat faster than XP Pro

What's great about it: Easy to install, does a lot of little things for you.
What's not so great: It's not XP Pro, some programs aren't compatible
I bought this for my HAM radio shack PC which I built up on a Gigabyte motherboard. My system has no resident drives in it, so I simply slipped my XP drive out of the HD tray and built up a Windows 7 drive using this. If you are used to XP, then get the Win 7 Pro version because I understand it has an XP emulator option and it's only 40 bucks more.
This works well, and it makes many small tasks easier, like setting up a home network or installing network printers because it finds them and installs the drivers automatically. It found every one of my device drivers without my having to lift a finger. To quote Dr. Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, "This Windows 7 is much more user friendly than Windows XP. I don't like that".
So, if we have to give up our beloved XP, this is an acceptable alternative. But if you use CHIRP to program your software-defined handheld transceiver you will be in for a rude surprise, because it is buggy with Win 7. But Office 2003 and others work just fine.
I would recommend this to a friend!

 Microsoft - Windows 8.1 - DVD-ROM - English
Microsoft - Windows 8.1 - DVD-ROM - English
It's the twenty-first century: multitasking is a way of life. Cell phones, laptops and tablets and their ever-expanding networks, apps and programs make it so we can almost always be doing at least two things at once. You send an e-mail while you're out to lunch. You call your clients while you're finishing up that presentation. You send your brother a birthday e-card while you're walking to your next appointment. Technology allows us to stay connected to the people and things we care about. It also creates a world where work and play are constantly overlapping — where creativity, productivity and recreation often go hand-in-hand. With that in mind, Windows 8.1 has been designed to bring you one operating system that can handle all of life's demands — no matter what it throws at you. Whether you're at work, at play or just looking for some inspiration, Windows 8.1 is there to deliver. Windows 8.1 personalizes your experience so can work and play in a way that allows you to access what truly matters to you. Beginning at your Start screen, you see a new layout that features your favorite news, friends, social networks and apps. You can customize colors, backgrounds and tile sizes to make your device unique to you. You can even access your familiar Windows desktop with just one click, so all the features you love are never far away. All your old apps, files and settings easily transfer and run on Windows 8.1. Your productivity will reach new heights thanks to Windows 8.1's ability to work harmoniously with your devices, whether they are touch screen or mouse-and-keyboard. You can stay connected to important photos and files by accessing them on your phone, tablet or PC with SkyDrive. Just sign in to your Microsoft account and your desktop will appear with all your personal preferences and settings so you can keep working wherever you are. In addition to the enhanced built-in apps and features, you can also discover more of your favorite apps with access to the Windows Store, which puts Netflix, ESPN, Skype, Halo: Spartan Assault, and other features conveniently at your fingertips. The new Windows 8.1 also makes searching, browsing and sharing faster and safer than ever. Use your device's power more efficiently for quick start-ups and app-switching as you stay up to date with security features, including Windows Defender, Windows Firewall and Windows Update. Life won't wait, so why should you? Access what is important to you — your way — so you get the best of work and play with Windows 8.1.

Can you install this version on a Vista machine without doing a "clean install" ?

I did it on my son's Toshiba Satellite that had VISTA, and it was effortless. I don't think it's a fast as a clean install. But the Win 7 upgrade will seem like heaven compared to Vista. That OS was the worst ever.

is this version known for me since I have vista?

will it recognize what's on my laptop during the install process, also I have 4.00 Ram
would it be possible I can go higher on Asus X83vb?
I installed Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade on my son's Toshiba laptop which had Vista, and it worked perfectly. His laptop motherboard is limited to 4 gb RAM, so I'm not sure about your Asus X83vb. But I CAN tell you this...
Unless you install the 64-bit version, your system will not recognize more than 4 gigs of RAM anyway, and I basically tossed my Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit drive because a lot of my old but good programs would not work with it. I mean, I have it but I never slip it in because I think the 64-bit version is less stable and fussier. And if you have Vista, the 64-bit version may not install easily. So I would use the 32-bit version.

what is this unit peak amperage?

Can this unit power a PNY Nvidia GTX 550 Ti, at high speed?
I would go with something with a little higher continuous power rating. The continuous rating on this is around 440 watts. I'm too lazy to take the side cover off my system to check it right now, but in my Gigabyte P43 system I have a 650 watt continuous supply. The quad-core Intel CPU uses 130 watts by itself.
