does battery drain in off position

not that i know of. it only takes one AA battery, but it gives you many hours of use with that.

no external speaker; must use headphones.

DOES IT HAVE A "HOLD" BUTTON?

A HOLD FUNCTION PREVENTS ACCIDENTAL CHANGING OF STATION.
I does have a lock button that prevents other buttons from functioning.

Is this small enough to carry around gym

absolutely. i wear mine on every bike ride and run. i dont use it in the gym, as they have music playing.

my radio plays as expected, but then it cuts out. By pressing the on/off button it will come back on and repeat the process. When I put it on fm, it plays for a moment, then cuts out. Why?

that usually means that the battery is just about dead.
