I bought this mostly so we could watch YouTube videos online. For our uses, I've found the Roku to be difficult and confusing. It's hard to even search for videos. Maybe for those who are using one or more of the many other channel options, this Wo ii ldnt be great but, I really wish I had spent my money on something else.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Is it worth upgrading if my TV has no HDMI?

I currently have a ROKU XDS. My TV is "enhanced definition", it has no HDMI connection. Right now, I'm using the component hookup for the Roku. It appears that, with the Roku 2, I would only have composite. I'm concerned about degradation of picture quality. However, on the XDS I can't get some that only work with the newer models.
Has anyone else upgraded from the XDS to Roku 2? How is the picture quality?
I have the Roku 2, and while I don't like it because I'm not very tech-savvy so I find it difficult and confusing, to me, I feel the picture is quite good. I'm sure to those who are "spoiled" by HDTV, they would be able to find something in the picture quality to complain about. My daughter, though, spent a fortune for a huge HDTV and I watched a movie on it and wasn't all that impressed. Call me hopelessly old-fashioned, but I have a seven year old son with ADHD and Autism. I have two of the old heavy analog
TVs and like the fact that I don't have to worry about my impulsive child running into or knocking over a weak, super-expensive piece of electronics when what we've got has worked fine for close to fifteen years and will most likely last at least ten more. But then, I was raised back in the day of a black & white set with only ABC, CBS, and NBC and actually had to get up to turn it on and off and change channels. So, I'm appreciative of what I have. As long as the picture is crisp and clear and everything is the right color, I'm good. :)

Oh man...I may as well be saying "When I was a kid I had to walk to school with my shoes stuffed full of newspaper to keep my feet warm from the five feet of snow as I trudged uphill. Both ways." >.<
