Sometimes you can use an alternative item to make things work, but for the best results, using the original product that was made for the item is the best way to keep everything working correctly with the proper electrical impulse. Apple needs Apple to insure protection and longevity - as any quality item does. I would not want to put a Ford part on a Jaguar...

headphones work for 3-5 minutes and then go dead
I have fully charged the headphones overnight several times with the headphone power switch turned to off position, properly positioned on charging rack, and rack's green power light is on. I turn on the headset power, light turns green, and the headset goes dead in 3-5 minutes of use (headset power light is still green - still charged?). If I disconnect and then reconnect the charging unit plug into the headphone output on the TV ... headphones work again but go dead again in 3-5 minutes. What is going wrong? Regular corded headphone works great all the time, so don't think it is in the TV headphone jack.
Occasionally we all have a bad day. So does a company factory. It just happens. You clearly have a bad unit. Please call the company and explain nicely and I am sure they will help you swap out the odd set and get another one that really works. I love mine and they have never been a bother and work perfectly for me from the very beginning. Do not become discouraged, just give a call and swap headsets. You will be delighted you did! Hope this helps!
